THIRTEEN BOOKS OF PRAGUE IN THE GREAT LICE EPIDEMIC
Commies, Crooks, Gypsies, spooks & Poets is part how-to manual on living day-to-day in post-communist country with advice on everything from treating head lice to buying a wused communist car and keeping it running and part travel guide through the landmarks, myths, and cultural life of Prague, the most magical of Europe's capital cities. Novak brings back to vivid life such figures as Hanus, the master clock maker whose eyes were plucked out by a jealous king, shares coversations with one of the Czech Republic's greatest living writers, Bohumil Hrabal, and rubs elbows with beer-loving President Vaclav Havel.
Novak ties his book together with personal accounts of fighting for oranges as a child in the Stalinist fifties, of getting beaten up by state security officers as a teenager in the sixties, of being expelled from his homeland "forever" in the seventies, and finally of passing on a sense of ethnic heritage to his American children.
This book is used, slightly warped but still in decent condition for more reading enjoyment!
202 pages with a stamp on the last page and a sticker from a library on the back and spine. I got it at a book sale.
